The Sighting

At around 5 p.m. on January 8, 1981, Renato Nicolaï, a 55-year-old retired machinist and farmer, was working on a terraced section of his property outside Trans-en-Provence in the Var department of southern France when he heard an unusual whistling sound. Turning toward it, he saw a lead-grey, disc-shaped object roughly two meters across and shaped like two saucers pressed rim to rim, hovering low over a lower terrace of his land. Nicolaï watched it for only a matter of seconds before it rose silently and departed, leaving no trail and no further sound. He did not immediately report it publicly; the following day, on the advice of neighbors, he informed the local gendarmerie, who visited the site, photographed a pair of circular marks and radial scuff patterns in the dirt, and — critically, by the standards of any prior UFO investigation anywhere — collected soil and plant samples for laboratory analysis rather than simply writing up witness testimony.

The Investigation

The case was passed to GEPAN, the UFO-research unit that France's national space agency CNES had established in 1977 specifically to apply scientific method to unexplained aerial phenomena reports — a body with no real equivalent in any other country's civilian government. Skeptics, including French researchers who revisited the file decades later, argue that GEPAN's conclusions rest on a small, imperfectly controlled sample — a single event, analyzed after the fact, with soil and plant chemistry that could plausibly result from an undocumented agricultural treatment, a discarded heat source, or even Nicolaï's own equipment, and that '4-5 tons of pressure' and '300-600°C' are best read as outer bounds of an imprecise model rather than a precise physical certainty. Some critics have also questioned whether contamination during sample handling, or simply an unusual but mundane combination of fertilizer chemistry and drainage, could reproduce the chlorophyll and mineral findings without invoking anything exotic at all.

Proponents counter that this is the single instance in UFO history where the skeptical objection — 'find me hard, independently measured physical data, not just testimony' — was actually met, by a government space agency with no incentive to manufacture a mystery, using French national forensic and university laboratories, years after the event, with no witness compensation or media circus driving the process. GEPAN's successor unit, SEPRA, and the broader French government file (part of France's unusually candid open-archive policy on UFO reports) have never retracted the technical findings, only debated their interpretation — a distinction, defenders argue, that separates this case from virtually every other trace report built on eyewitness description alone.

Why It Endures

Trans-en-Provence is ufology's closest approach to what skeptics always demand and rarely get: a state science agency, with real laboratories and no populist incentive, examining hard measurements rather than adjudicating a story. Whether those measurements point to an exotic craft or an unusually well-documented mundane event, the case set a bar — a national government treating a single farmer's report seriously enough to send actual scientists — that most UFO-heavy nations, including the United States, have still never matched.
