Daylight Disc (DD)
Daylight Disc, abbreviated DD in J. Allen Hynek's classification scheme, covers any daytime sighting of a solid, structured object — disc-shaped or otherwise — as opposed to the vague night lights of the Nocturnal Light category. Daylight conditions matter enormously for evidence quality: they let witnesses judge relative size and distance against known landmarks, and, critically, they make photography and film possible, which is why nearly every photographic UFO case of ufology's classic era falls under DD. The 1958 Trindade Island photographs, taken by a Brazilian Navy photographer during an officially sanctioned oceanographic expedition and showing a saturn-shaped object against a daylight sky, remain one of the most analyzed DD image sets ever produced, examined repeatedly for hoax evidence and never conclusively debunked. Because a DD report can, in principle, be checked against physics — shadow direction, parallax, lens artifacts, cloud reference points — the category draws the heaviest technical scrutiny from both photo analysts trying to authenticate a case and skeptics hunting for the tell-tale signs of a thrown model, a kite, or a double exposure. Structured daylight objects with visible detail are also the reports most often folded into "trace case" or "radar-visual" investigations when corroborating physical or instrument evidence exists alongside the photograph.
