Earthlights

Earthlights is the name given to a hypothesized natural, purely geological source of luminous phenomena — persistent glowing lights, sometimes hovering, sometimes drifting, recurring for years or decades at specific locations — theorized primarily by researchers Michael Persinger and Paul Devereux to result from mechanical strain building up in underground rock formations, particularly along active fault lines, generating piezoelectric charge or ionized gas that reaches the surface and glows. The theory was developed specifically to explain recurring "window area" light phenomena at fixed geographic locations known for producing anomalous lights repeatedly over long periods rather than as one-off sightings — Norway's Hessdalen valley, documented and instrumented by researchers since the 1980s, and the long-reported Marfa Lights of west Texas are the two locations most closely associated with the earthlights hypothesis. The theory occupies an unusual position squarely between believers and skeptics: it offers a fully natural, non-extraterrestrial physical mechanism that mainstream conventional-explanation researchers can accept in principle, while remaining itself a genuinely fringe and only partially validated area of geophysics that hasn't achieved full acceptance within mainstream geology either, since the specific piezoelectric mechanism proposed remains difficult to test and replicate directly under controlled laboratory conditions matching real fault-line geology.
