Orthoteny
Orthoteny was French physicist Aimé Michel's claim, developed from his analysis of the intense 1954 French UFO wave, that sighting locations plotted on a map fell along straight great-circle lines — an apparent geometric pattern he argued was too precise to be coincidental and suggested purposeful flight paths, possibly even navigational corridors used by the objects themselves. The theory generated enormous excitement in 1950s ufology because it offered something the field otherwise almost never had: a testable, quantitative, mathematically stated claim rather than another individual witness account. Later statistical analysis dissolved the finding, however, showing that random, unrelated points scattered across a map will produce apparently aligned "lines" at a similar rate purely by chance, once you allow yourself to choose which points to connect after the fact — a classic case of pattern-seeking (apophenia) mistaken for genuine structure. Despite being statistically discredited, orthoteny remains historically significant as ufology's first serious mathematical ambition, and Michel's underlying 1954 dataset itself — one of the best-documented European flaps of the classic era — is still studied on its own merits, independent of the disproven geometric theory his analysis originally built on top of it.
