Trans-Medium Travel
Trans-medium travel describes an object reportedly moving between air, water, and in some accounts space, without any loss of performance or visible transition effect at the boundary — no splash, no deceleration, no apparent adjustment as the object crosses from one physical medium into a completely different one. It is one of the "five observables," the set of reported UAP flight characteristics popularized by AATIP-era analysts like Luis Elizondo as evidence that at least some objects exceed known aerospace engineering, since no confirmed human aircraft or watercraft can genuinely cross the air-water boundary at speed without the significant structural and hydrodynamic redesign that would be needed to survive both environments. The 2013 Aguadilla, Puerto Rico infrared video — an object filmed apparently descending into the ocean off the Puerto Rican coast without any visible splash or deceleration — is the case most frequently cited as a clean trans-medium example, alongside historical USO reports like Shag Harbour in 1967. The capability is exactly why AARO's official mandate is explicitly framed as "all-domain" rather than purely aerial: the office's founding congressional language was written specifically to ensure water and undersea reports weren't structurally excluded the way earlier programs like Blue Book had implicitly been, by name, air-only.
