The Sighting

In the infrared footage, the object appeared as two blurry, roundish thermal blobs connected together, moving slowly westward and invisible to the naked eye at that distance; the helicopter's own radar did not detect it. Most strikingly, the object appeared to release a thick, motionless black trail that hung in the sky rather than dispersing as ordinary exhaust would.
The Investigation
The footage was submitted to CEFAA, the Chilean government's own Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena — a rare instance of an air force formally tasking scientists with evaluating a UAP report. Their reconstruction identified the object as Iberia Airlines flight IB6830, an Airbus A340 four-engine aircraft that had departed Santiago and was climbing through approximately 26,755 to 28,963 feet at the time of the sighting — a distance, heading, banking maneuver, and thermal signature (the four engines forming a distinctive 'peanut'-shaped infrared blob) that matched the video frame by frame. The black trail, they determined, was not engine exhaust (which requires far higher altitudes to condense visibly) but a semi-persistent aerodynamic contrail, formed between roughly 20,000 and 28,000 feet by pressure changes over the airframe during a climbing turn, appearing dark against the infrared-cold sky because it registered as comparatively warm condensed water vapor. The analysis further suggested a second aircraft, the earlier-favored candidate LATAM flight LA330, may also appear later in the footage, meaning CEFAA's own two-year investigation had overlooked that as many as two separate, entirely ordinary airliners were visible in different portions of the same video — a conclusion reached only because independent analysts checked actual flight data that the official inquiry never had.
CEFAA's defenders note the committee explicitly avoided claiming extraterrestrial origin and always described the case using the more cautious term 'unidentified,' while its critics argue the episode is a clean demonstration of how even a well-funded government investigation can miss a mundane explanation that crowdsourced technical analysts, given the right public data, resolved within five days.
