Ball Lightning

Ball lightning is a rare, genuinely poorly understood atmospheric plasma phenomenon — a glowing, roughly spherical light, typically reported during or immediately after thunderstorms, that can persist for several seconds and sometimes appears to move independently through the air or even pass through solid barriers like closed windows, behavior that has made the phenomenon extraordinarily difficult to study under controlled conditions since it cannot reliably be reproduced on demand in a laboratory. Despite occasional instrumented observations and a substantial body of witness testimony collected over centuries, mainstream physics still lacks full scientific consensus on exactly what causes ball lightning or how it sustains its glow for as long as witnesses describe, which places it in the unusual position of being itself a barely-explained natural phenomenon that science treats as real but not yet properly understood. That genuine scientific uncertainty is exactly what makes ball lightning attractive as an explanation for other anomalous light reports: it is science's perennial leading candidate for the WWII "foo fighter" cohort and for many close-range luminous-sphere encounters more broadly, offering a natural mechanism serious researchers can point to without needing to invoke anything extraterrestrial, even while acknowledging the explanation itself still rests on a phenomenon nobody fully understands.
