SOBEPS

SOBEPS, the Société Belge d'Étude des Phénomènes Spatiaux, is the Belgian civilian research organization that coordinated the investigation of the country's extraordinary 1989-92 UFO wave, achieving a level of cooperation from the Belgian Air Force that remains close to unique in ufology's history. Rather than treating SOBEPS as an outside nuisance, Belgian military officials shared radar data, scrambled F-16 fighters for tracked intercept attempts, and allowed their own officers' testimony to be folded directly into the civilian investigation's published findings — a genuine partnership between amateur researchers and a national air force that most ufology organizations elsewhere in the world have never come close to replicating. That collaboration produced one of the best-documented UFO waves on record: thousands of witness reports, corroborating radar tracks, and photographic evidence including the widely circulated (and later admitted-hoax) black-triangle photograph, all gathered and cross-checked under a single coordinated research effort rather than scattered piecemeal across competing organizations. SOBEPS' work on the Belgian wave is now treated as the field's reference model for what civilian-military UFO collaboration can look like when a government body chooses transparency over the more typical instinct toward dismissal or silence, even though the wave's ultimate cause — genuine unknown, misidentified stealth-era aircraft, or hoax-amplified social contagion — remains disputed to this day.
