Trace Case

A trace case is a close encounter that leaves physical residue behind after the witness leaves — landing-gear or "pod mark" impressions in soil, circles of flattened or dehydrated vegetation, scorched ground, or elevated radiation readings — corresponding to CE2 on Hynek's close-encounter scale. Physical traces matter because, unlike testimony, they can in principle be sampled, dated, and analyzed by soil chemists, botanists, and physicists independent of what the witness believed they saw. Socorro, New Mexico in 1964 produced the most famous American trace case: police officer Lonnie Zamora's report of four burn marks and landing-gear impressions, examined on-site by FBI and Air Force personnel within hours. Trans-en-Provence, France in 1981 is the field's gold-standard trace case by scientific process rather than fame: GEPAN, the French space agency's UAP office, tested soil samples with agronomists and found genuine biochemical alteration to the vegetation consistent with the witness's account of a landed craft, a conclusion that survives peer replication attempts better than almost any other physical UFO evidence on record. Skeptics note that most claimed traces — fungal fairy rings, animal bedding circles, ordinary erosion — have mundane causes, which is exactly why the rare cases with rigorous chemical follow-up like Trans-en-Provence carry disproportionate weight in the debate.
