Jacques Vallée is a French-born astronomer, computer scientist, and venture capitalist whose parallel career in Silicon Valley (he helped build the ARPANET-era networked database that anticipated hyperlinking) gave his UFO research an unusual rigor. Working alongside J. Allen Hynek in the 1960s, he grew dissatisfied with the simple extraterrestrial-visitation hypothesis, arguing in Passport to Magonia (1969) that UFO encounters resemble folklore, fairy abductions, and religious visions across centuries and cultures more than a straightforward space-alien narrative. This 'multiverse' or interdimensional hypothesis, elaborated across Dimensions (1988) and later works, holds that the phenomenon may be a control system that manipulates human belief rather than a simple physical craft. Vallée also pioneered statistical case cataloguing and physical-trace analysis, and served as a real-life inspiration for the French scientist Claude Lacombe in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. In recent decades he has focused on high-strangeness case investigation, including the alleged Trinity, New Mexico crash-retrieval case detailed in Trinity: The Best Kept Secret (2021, with Paola Harris), which has drawn both intense interest and sharp skepticism over evidentiary quality. Unlike many peers, Vallée has remained a working scientist throughout, giving his theoretical frameworks continued influence over serious UAP researchers even as his more speculative claims remain contested and unproven.
