Greys
Also known as: Grays, Zeta Reticulans, EBEs
- First known report
- The Betty and Barney Hill abduction (September 1961, New Hampshire) contains the prototype description, though Barney initially described 'Nazi-like' figures under hypnosis before the leader's face settled into the wrap-around-eyed template; the fully canonical Grey solidified through the 1970s-80s abduction literature and crystallized worldwide with Whitley Strieber's 1987 'Communion' cover.
- Relative frequency
- dominant — the majority entity in post-1980 North American abduction reports; far less common in Latin American and European CE3 reports, where suited dwarfs and small humanoids dominated the pre-1980 record
Reconstruction based on witness descriptions
Physical description
Small (0.9-1.4 m), grey- or putty-skinned humanoids with oversized hairless heads, enormous black almond-shaped eyes wrapping toward the temples, vestigial nose and mouth, thin limbs and torso, and four-fingered hands sometimes described with a partial thumb. Usually reported in groups of three to five, moving with clinical, unhurried detachment; communication is almost always described as telepathic rather than verbal, and abductees frequently report an inability to move or scream in their presence.
Skeptical reading
The Grey is the strongest evidence for cultural feedback: its features match the hypnopompic 'intruder' of sleep paralysis (a dark bedroom figure, paralysis, dread), and its look was broadcast to millions by the 1975 NBC dramatization of the Hill case and by the Communion cover art (1987), after which Grey reports exploded in frequency and uniformity. Psychologists (Clancy, Klass) point to hypnotic regression as a confabulation engine that actively installs the template investigators already expect to find; the big-eyes/small-face proportions also match the human 'neoteny' releaser studied in developmental psychology — the same ratio that makes infants and cartoon characters read as sympathetic.
